about

Six years ago a very sweet very talented man left us, far too young. This song is for Paul Leahy and for all his friends who miss him like I do. It was inspired by him, and is my humble attempt to honour his style and inspiration.

Paul Leahy was a superb musician who crafted beautiful songs that he played and sang with every fibre of his being. An immensely gifted guitar player he took his inspiration from his heroes and turned it into a style all his own. He owned the stage; I never heard him have an off night.

A few weeks ago as I looked at the photo of him that hangs in my studio control room I was overwhelmed with an urgent need to process some of my still-lingering grief by writing a song in his style - in his honour and memory. I recorded it over the next couple weeks. Eric Napier generously contributed his bass playing and harmony singing. Northern Electric is releasing it today - Polly Day - the anniversary of the Super Duper show at the Rickshaw that was held for all us local people to celebrate Paul and his talent. Thanks to Richard Chapman for his work in getting this released.

This song is for you, Paul. I feel you can hear it, wherever you are.

Polly (We All Miss You)
2023 Marc LʼEsperance

For the time he walked among us
With all his heart his mighty axe was slung
In his left hand an orchestra
And in his right a beating drum
Polly how we miss you, we miss you so
Why couldnʼt you stay, whyʼd you have to go?
Polly we all miss you, we miss you so
He loved his red wine and cigarettes
Man he could really play guitar
He knew he could take it far
And when he sang
He was a super duper star
For the time he walked among us
With all his heart his mighty axe was slung
In his left hand a symphony
And in his right a beating drum
Polly how we miss you, we miss you so
Why couldnʼt you stay, whyʼd you have to go?
Polly we all miss you, we miss you so
He had his family and no regrets
